April captures the visceral emotion and explosive energy of the artist at a critical moment in her career. After the death of her husband, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner began to paint in his barn studio. Its spacious interior allowed her to work at a larger scale than ever before. Both unruly and lyrical, Krasner’s gestural mark making endowed the composition with a striking visual effect that reflects her desire, in her words, for each canvas “to breathe and be alive.” The overall composition is vigorous and vivid—a declaration of the self and of release.
