Georges Hugnet’s book 1961 includes aphorisms, free prose, collages, and four hand-colored photomontages. Hugnet added a unique collage frontispiece to special editions like this one to give to fellow artists and friends. The images present surreal environments and unconventional scales, such as a woman’s undergarments superimposed on a cloud of volcanic ash or two female figures emerging from a flooded opera house floor as onlookers watch from the balconies. Hugnet, inspired by Raoul Hausmann and other Berlin Dadaists, played into the dreamlike visual language of mass media and advertising, reinterpreted into otherworldly fantasies of the mind and body.
