Inscribed here and on nearby posters, the philosophy “An injury to one is an injury to all” is embraced by labor unions worldwide. In 1993 Nelson Mandela evoked the phrase during his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, while acknowledging global support of the antiapartheid movement: “These countless human beings, both inside and outside our country, had the nobility of spirit to stand in the path of tyranny and injustice, without seeking selfish gain. They recognized that an injury to one is an injury to all and therefore acted together in defense of justice and a common human decency.”
