This striking exhibition catalogue is a compendium of El Lissitzky’s designs for the Soviet Union’s pavilion at the 1928 International Press Exhibition in Cologne, Germany. The exhibition, also known as Pressa, featured roughly 1,500 exhibitors and showcased the journalistic culture of 43 participating countries. Lissitzky’s catalogue documented the installations and design of the pavilion through the use of photomontage. The highlight of the catalogue is a seven-and-a-half-foot-long centerfold reproducing the pavilion’s photo frieze, which Lissitzky designed to run along the entire interior perimeter. Katalog des Sowjet-pavillons serves as an excellent example of Soviet constructivist book design, masterfully combining bold typography and powerful imagery.
