Jean-Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine was a French artist who was primarily active in Poland. This searing Self-Portrait, made when the artist was 33, suggests the enormous influence of Rembrandt's chiaroscuro drypoints and in particular his Self-Portrait at a Window of 1648 (available for viewing upon appointment in the Art Institute's Department of Prints and Drawings).
