Delicate pale green irises climb up the ivory ground of this dress panel. The floral and foliate elements here are made of cut velvet, silhouetted by the contrasting color of the ground fabric. The plush velvet design rising from the smooth ground creates a play between pattern and texture, an effect also apparent in this velvet cityscape (1991.593).
